“I need you to move the day my payment comes out. I got a new job and get paid on a different schedule now” “Uh, ok. Why does the payment date have to change?” “Well it needs to come out the same day I get paid or I’ll spend it all”
........
MONEY MANAGEMENT. DO YOU FUCKING KNOW IT.
Also read this in the voice of a fat-ass ghetto white trash lady in a Chrysler minivan with her eight demon crotchspawn and 400lb husband wearing a baseball cap, wifebeater, and oh jesus are those boxer shorts dude put some pants on for the love of god.
So basically if she had a Bible in one hand and meth in the other she’d be Kansas personified.
I mean, I’m consistently broke because of my spending, but at least I’ve never missed a payment on anything ever. Can’t say I miss that job, though.

I usually run flat broke about 4 days before payday. My lunch is then paid for by whatever change I have left over.
I really need to manage my (small amount of) money better. I’ve already spent nearly 1/4th of my check on Steam games.

Putting aside the classism... She could be spending it on rent/bills/groceries, things with more flexible purchase times. Asking to move the payment date *is* money management.

It strikes me as ridiculous that someone is so incapable of thinking “I have a $200 car payment coming up, I should pretend like that $200 in my bank account doesn’t exist so my credit doesn’t get hurt/car repossessed by me missing a payment.” and instead insist on us having to jump through all kinds of hoops (the financing software isn’t a fan of changing payment schedules) to work around their schedule.

i’ve done this on various occasions for many reasons. Recently, my damn escrow went up $430. That screws everything up when getting paid bi-weekly :’( Oh, they just cut our hours as well.

I doubt she was thinking that smart. This lady is known to get payday loans in order to buy a new cell phone, meanwhile her kids (of which she has many) wear tattered clothes and are barely looked after in any way. And this sort of thing was the norm at the dealership I used to work at. It’s hard not to get a little classist/racist/-ist when every single person you deal with is a walking stereotype to a ludicrous degree.
Then again I guess I’m doing the “entitled white middle-class male” stereotype pretty well. Shit. Hello kettle, nice to meet you.

I worked at target between when I graduated college and when I started my job. For some reason they thought it’d be cool for me to start in August even though I graduated in December. Made me gain an appreciation for people who try to live on wages like that.

Before I had the Mustang (and now that the Mustang is gone) I usually have a hundred or so left over after each paycheck. The big thing was not eating at a restaurant every day for lunch. That saved me stupid amounts of money.

Yeah, my take home is roughly $1100 a month. It’s pretty pitiful. Given my propensity for spending far too much money on shitty 90s cars I’m having difficulty moving out of my dad’s house. Fortunately he doesn’t seem to give a shit, and despite us living together I hardly ever see the guy.

I get paid bi-weekly and until just now I had insurance payments and car payments that both came out on their own schedule. Car payment the 1st of the month, insurance was every 30 days regardless of anything else, get paid every two weeks regardless of anything else. What was really fun was when they’d sync up and my insurance and car payment would come out the same pay period and I had to get through the period with $100.
Still, I managed to keep track of it all (calendars are fun things, and being able to check my balance via text at a whim helped)

The things is, money coming out to pay a bill is the same whether it’s on payday or not. She’s just not good at managing her money and not spending it all before making the payment.

Don’t you still live in your parents’ house? Not saying that lady isn’t an idiot but until you have to work without a safety net, you shouldn’t judge. It’s a good possibility she never had a good example of how to manage money - which is why she bought a high-depreciation minivan at a buy-here-pay-here lot in the first place.

lol our calendar just keeps getting filled it seems. Life is crazy man. Me and my wife have had plenty of close pay periods with less than $100 for sure. Shit happens man, I wouldn’t knock anyone for trying to get things done. Glad you can manage your stuff well. Even when things are planned out well, it can change in an instant. If you can help people in that way at your job, i’d take pride in that :]

Crazy how that shit that’s soooo easy for the rest of us gets difficult when you don’t have that much coming in, bills to pay, mouths to feed, etc.

I think I take home more on unemployment. Fortunately when I made good money I saved, also paid off my car. I’ve got a bit of a thing for fast German sedans, I was toying with replacing the 1 series with a 2009 C63 AMG they had a the BMW dealer near me, it was like 23k., pretty glad I didn’t do that, although an AMG would probably be easier to sell than a 128i.

Needing a payday loan to replace a cell phone is just another symptom of living paycheck to paycheck, not stupidity. And please don’t get me started on how Kansas and many other states have made birth control/family planning resources scarce for lower income families. The “constant judgement of the poor” circejerk is just not cool.

Sure, it’s a symptom, but when I was that level of “have no money” I got a $20 nokia flip phone to keep in touch with people/job interviews/etc. until I could afford a refurbished $170 smartphone (I still buy refurbished 2 year old smartphones. Makes better financial sense), not a brand-new just-released iPhone.
And yes, Kansas is ridiculous about birth control and family planning. Regardless of income level, but especially for lower incomes.
And honestly yeah I do judge some poor people because they give the rest a bad name. I know several destitute families that are where they are because of circumstances beyond their control and are doing what they can to get off their feet, and I respect the hell out of them for the sacrifices they’re making to live an honest life. I also know a ton of destitute families that got there due to sheer idiocy and bad decision making and stay there because of their vanity/whatever and refusal to put in effort (which many will brag about) to fix their situation.

The worst part is that they will never improve from their current condition. There is absolutely no long term thinking at play, and as a result they will continue to make worse and worse personal financial decisions.
The kids will learn from mom & dad, and be in the exact same position 10 yrs from now as well.

My last job was terrible, paid well but it seriously wore me down. Not sure the money it anymore. I was thinking about quitting, I was gonna wait to September, but I got laid off in April. I just wanted to run out my lease and I wanted to try and pay off the 1 or sell it. Think I’m gonna move back in with my parents, this time with an M3.

“And honestly yeah I do judge some poor people”
Right, that’s the part that’s not cool. It’s easy to think you’re better than someone because of your perception of their situation, but this whole post is punching down. Someone wanted to move their payment date. Big deal, my credit cards offer that same service.

What I’m saying is that it doesn’t matter when she pays. Payday or not the money has to go out. If I were to pay my rent on payday, it would have the exact same impact on my overall amount of spending money as if I paid it a week later.

Obviously the impact is the same, but that assumes you have no other variable expenses. When you have multiple paydays per month and multiple due dates per month, it makes sense to space them out to have cash on hand for groceries/gas/incidentals between paydays.

It is easy to jump to negative conclusions about people because of stereotypes and not having all the information. Reading your comments, I was starting to judge you for having a mustang but also sometimes having only $100 to your name. It is not right though, so I stopped myself. That lady might might have decided that a smart phone is necessary because she needs the calendar app to keep track of things or to apply for jobs. And those might not be her kids.

This. I cannot imagine dealing with that.
Kinda related: I live in a ruralish area of NE Atlanta (around Road Atlanta as it were) and the only easy to access grocery store is an Ingles. The bottom of the barrel people I encounter when picking up a few essentials is astounding.

It’s sad. A fucking paper ledger would avoid everything. As soon as you get your paycheck write “+$whatever paycheck = $total balance // -$car payment = $remaining balance” and treat that remaining balance like it’s God. That’s basic money management 101 and in that sort of situation there’s very little excuse.

Oh, I don’t disagree. But this thing that is obvious to us is difficult for others. We must be compassionate because life will already be very hard for them.
